You pick a PDF or a photo, and Shrink makes a smaller copy on your iPhone. If something is not working, the checks below cover almost everything.

## How it works

1. Tap + at the top right, then Choose File for a PDF or Choose Photo for a picture. Or share a PDF or an image from Files or Mail and pick Shrink.
2. Shrink makes the copy on your iPhone. The list shows its size before and after.
3. Tap the copy to preview it, and share it from there or with a swipe.

## What Shrink does to a file

- **A PDF** gets two attempts, and the smaller result wins. One repacks the file without losing anything. The other also re-encodes the images inside at screen resolution, and is used only when the text, form answers and annotations come out the same.
- **A photo** is capped at 2400 pixels on its long side and saved as JPEG, or as PNG when it has transparency, without its location and camera details. An animated or multi-page image is not supported.
- **Kept when it cannot shrink.** A copy has to be at least 1 % smaller than the original, or the original is kept as it was. A photo kept that way still loses its location and camera details. A HEIC photo is the exception: its location can only be removed by saving it again as JPEG, which can come out larger, and its row says “Location removed”.

## First things to check

- **It says "Already small".** The file had nothing left to remove: its text was already compressed, or its images were already small. A PDF made only of text often shrinks by 5 to 20 percent; a scanned one by 90 percent or more.
- **It says "Signed, not changed".** The PDF carries a digital signature. Any change to the file breaks the signature, so Shrink keeps it exactly as it was.
- **"This PDF is password protected".** Shrink does not ask for passwords. Remove the password in the app that made the PDF, then compress it.
- **Shrink is not in the share sheet.** Shrink appears when sharing from Files or Mail. Scroll the row of apps to the end, tap More, and turn Shrink on. In Photos, choose the photo with Choose Photo in Shrink instead.
- **The photo is still large.** Photos under 2400 pixels that are already well compressed may come back only a little smaller.
